There's a lot of heavy stuff going on in the world right now. Some of us with privilege don't really feel the brunt of it. But many do. And I think one of the ways we can show up as leaders, is anticipating that current events may affect folks in different ways.
That might be program participants, who could use an extra check in and offer of additional support. It could be staff, who might appreciate more spacious deadlines or help prioritizing their workloads. It could be yourself - needing a bit more grace and rest.
What I've learned from my three kids is that it's a lot easier to anticipate that there are needs, than to actually predict what it is they need. So in moments like the walk home, I do my best to ask them what could help. Maybe they need a turn in the wagon, or to take a break for a few minutes. Maybe singing a song will make the time pass a little faster.
I'm sure you're doing your best to meet needs during this challenging time. Don't forget to ask yourself and those around you what they need to be present with more ease and comfort. It may seem simple, but it can go a long way.
