Sometimes weekly evaluation inspiration for...

Non-profits who DARE

Although it's mid-June, here in Southwestern Ontario it's really starting to feel like summer. Warm weather, festivals, and, of course, construction at every turn.

As an evaluator, one of our competencies (in Canada, anyway), is reflective practice. I'm a pretty reflective-by-default kind of person (at least that's what my therapists always tell me), but I still take the competency to heart and try to think of ways to improve my own self reflection, in work and in life in general.

This afternoon, I headed out on what I thought would be a 30-minute errand, which, adding construction time, ended up being closer to 90-minutes. I was super frustrated, this was definitely not in the time-budget for the day.

The thing about traffic is, though, you kind of just have to sit through it. Sure, you can try to make a turn and take a detour, but chances are you're not the trailblazer you think you are.

As I was sitting at a particularly backed up section of the trip, I started thinking about how little time I've had for reflection lately. I've been super busy, and I'm finding this time in the world a lot of people are just putting their heads down and getting through it - myself included.

When I don't reflect, though, I notice it in my work. Believe it or not, things actually get harder. I struggle to find the right depth in report writing, and connections that may have come up naturally before now seem out of reach.

Today, I had just the right amount of space in my brain to see summer traffic as a bit of a blessing. When I know I'm going somewhere that'll take a while (which is pretty much anywhere these days), I'm going to come prepared with a few reflective questions to make the time feel a bit better spent.

How do you pass the time when you're sitting in traffic?

Issue #35 Not at all weekly evaluation inspiration for... Non-profits who DARE "Were you showing that video specifically for me?" reflected a recent workshop participant after I showed this TED Talk on asking better questions by Amber L. Wright. Of course I wasn't, but the reflection was exactly why I love to share this video. The concept is so simple - the questions we ask matter, and the responses we get differ based on not only how we ask the question, but how we make them feel. So many of...

Issue #34 Not at all weekly evaluation inspiration for... Non-profits who DARE When I was pregnant with my first child, a friend who had recently had a baby said her best recommendation was to 'anticipate the baby's needs'. I guess in many ways, I've been doing that for the past 8 years. I was thinking a lot about this as we headed back to school last week. There are certain things that I've learned with years of wisdom that my kids just can't anticipate yet. Like on Friday, when we headed...

Issue #32 Not really weekly evaluation inspiration for... Non-profits who DARE Hello out there! As an evaluator and a generally-curious person, I'm almost constantly reflecting on my experiences and those of others around me. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about how I show up in my work (or not), and when it has to be me, versus when I might be able to share the load with others. It reminded me of one of the approaches I advocated for a lot early in my career. I've always loved working as...
