Not really weekly evaluation inspiration for...

Non-profits who DARE

Happy (belated) International Women's Day! I've gotten out of the cadence of sending weekly messages, but IWD 2025 inspired me to fire up the newsletter.

A lot of the reasons why I haven't been able to do much 'unbillable' work within my business, have to do with the unpaid work I'm doing at home. I remember last IWD I was in week five of sick kids at home. We do our best to keep immune systems strong, but daycares, schools, and recreational activities have a way of spreading germs.

This winter hasn't been quite as bad on that front, but I did lose almost two entire weeks of work. Add that to other family and community demands, and it can take its toll. This isn't meant to be a sob story, though!

Keeping track of these work disruptions (sick kids) and reflecting on how it influences me in cycles, has helped me realize that in the future, I can plan to take on less work in the winter months so that I'm not struggling to keep up when, inevitably, a virus runs through the house.

It's these kinds of reflections that allow us to see the ways that 'business as usual' isn't serving us, or our staff or communities. Paying attention to cycles and trends can go a long way in creating kinder workplaces that are better for morale and overall wellbeing.

In honour of the IWD theme of #AccelerateAction, I want to give away some of my time to help break free of the old ways of doing things. Book a free 30-minute chat and we'll conspire to see how you can get past what's holding you back, and come up with a couple of practical, actionable steps for moving forward.

Tasha Van Vlack at the Non-Profit Hive had it right that 30 minutes is enough to really make a difference. Now, more than ever, connection is critical. If there's a question or idea that you'd like to talk through, this is your sign to start the conversation. Feel free to share this with others who might find it useful.

TL:DR; pick my brain for 30 minutes for free, no strings attached.

Issue #35 Not at all weekly evaluation inspiration for... Non-profits who DARE "Were you showing that video specifically for me?" reflected a recent workshop participant after I showed this TED Talk on asking better questions by Amber L. Wright. Of course I wasn't, but the reflection was exactly why I love to share this video. The concept is so simple - the questions we ask matter, and the responses we get differ based on not only how we ask the question, but how we make them feel. So many of...

Issue #34 Not at all weekly evaluation inspiration for... Non-profits who DARE When I was pregnant with my first child, a friend who had recently had a baby said her best recommendation was to 'anticipate the baby's needs'. I guess in many ways, I've been doing that for the past 8 years. I was thinking a lot about this as we headed back to school last week. There are certain things that I've learned with years of wisdom that my kids just can't anticipate yet. Like on Friday, when we headed...

Issue #33 Sometimes weekly evaluation inspiration for... Non-profits who DARE Although it's mid-June, here in Southwestern Ontario it's really starting to feel like summer. Warm weather, festivals, and, of course, construction at every turn. As an evaluator, one of our competencies (in Canada, anyway), is reflective practice. I'm a pretty reflective-by-default kind of person (at least that's what my therapists always tell me), but I still take the competency to heart and try to think of ways...
